Pink City
Intro:
The glorious old city of Jaipur which is popularly known as the
Pink City was the seat of the past rulers of Jaipur. Pink City was
founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in the year 1727 A.D. Pink City
owes its existence to the efforts made by Jai Singh to move his
capital from Amer to Jaipur. The place got its name after the walls
and buildings were painted with the pink color following a scheduled
visit of the Prince of Wales. It is believed that Maharaja wanted to
give the place Mughal outlook, as their monuments were mainly built
with red sandstone.
Tourist Attractions:
Pink City is a great tourist place. The colorful monuments and
medieval architecture give the entire place a very serene and
soothing outlook. The place is provided with many monumental
structures that depict the life style of the Maharajas of this
place. The magnificient structures have a much refined kind of
feelings associated with them. The main attractions of the Pink City
are City Palace and Museum, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar. There are
many other important places and offices in the Pink City. The entire
region is quite a developed one with the local population enjoying a
modern life style.
City Over view:
Jaipur in modern times comprises of the old city that is Pink City
and many commercial areas all around the walled Pink City. The Pink
City lies a little north of the Jaipur city centre. The area of Pink
City is enclosed within massive walls that were built to protect the
place from invasions. The wall girdles round the city and is
discontinous at eleven gates which provide the access into the
region. Pink City was designed according to architectural plans
derived from the ancient hindu treatise Shilpa Shastra. The place is
divided into nine rectangular sectors with sraight roads
intersecting only at right angles. The main entry into the Pink City
is from the southern end which is provided with five entry-points or
the four gates in the southern wall. These gates are Ajmeri Gate,
New Gate, Sanganeri Gate and Ghat Gate.

Pink City is neighboured by other prominent places of Jaipur which
are Ashok Nagar, Adarsh Nagar and Bani Park. Some nearby attractions
include Ram Niwas Garden, Central Museum and Nahargarh Fort.
