Makar Sakranti is the first festival of the year, celebrated
on 14th of January. The devotees take a holy dip in the tank at
Galtaji. Popularly known as the Kite Flying Festival, it is
celebrated by flying thousands of kites in the sky during the day
and at night, the lights of specially crafted kites with paper
lanterns flicker like fireflies. The women wear new clothes, new
glass bangles and hold get-together to share sweets and gifts. A new
married is given ornaments made of sugar drops and her new relatives
are inivited to meet and welcome her at a Haldi Kumkum celebration.
Makar Sakranti is known by different names in all over country and
make it in different styles as Punjab-Lohri, TamilNadu, Andhra
Pradesh- Pongal.
